Take the Dead German Composer Test!

Paul Hindemith should be notable by the fact that his primary instrument was the viola, but it is notable that he made an effort to write a concerto or sonata for every instrument in the orchestra. And, of course, there are the six viola sonatas...Anyhow, in addition to being a composer, Hindemith was fascinated by trains. He had extensive model train setups, and he felt he composed so well while aboard that he once scheduled a train ride from Connecticut to Texas in order to solve composer's block--but he solved the problem early and got off in New York City. Hindemith's manuscripts are interesting in that there are often doodles in the margins, which should do something to counter the image that his later work is always strictly academic.
A few key works: Symphonische Metamorphoses nach Themen von Carl Maria von Weber, Ludus Tonalis, Der Schwanendreher, Trauermusik
